I did this near the end of the day, after hiking the Cedar Ridge Preserve that morning. This was an out-and-back trail, and if I'd hiked the entire thing, and come back, would have been around 18 miles. I got there around 5:40 PM, so I decided to hike until 7:00, then turn around and come back. From the looks of the GPS track, I almost made it to the entrance of Twin Coves Park.
The lake is a popular spot. We have the beach in Florida, and they have the lake. There were lots of boats, people swimming and picnicking, and loads of mountain bikers. Some of the bikers amazed me, going as fast as they were over this hilly and rocky terrain.
The first half-mile or so was along the lake, but soon the trail turned into the woods. In several spots, it came back out to the lake, and there were plenty of good views. The neatest thing about this was the color: the bright blue of the sky and lake, against the dusty red of the soil, and green of the vegetation.
